The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the Canadian national police service and an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety Canada. It is also responsible for security checks conducted by CIC.


When you are applying for permanent residence in Canada and you are residing temporarily in Canada you need your fingerprints taken by any police station inside Canada and send them to the RCMP.

If you are outside Canada the fingerprints must have been taken by a local police station and send them to the RCMP. Not every applicant has to do so unless they are specifically asked by CIC.

Following there is the current list of countries who do not have to obtain fingerprints upfront when the sponsored person has lived 6 or more months in Canada. It refers to Spouse, Common-Law or Conjugal Partner and Dependent Children applying under the Family-Class

Applicants residing in:

Algeria,

Australia,

Fiji,

France,

Libya,

Morocco,

New Zealand,

Poland,

Tunisia,

applicants residing in Germany may apply for Canadian police certificates at any local police force in Canada,

do not have to obtain fingerprints and police certificates from the RCMP. However, in certain cases these are required.

The processing fee will be $35 (Cdn.) (May 1st. 2007)

You have to provide a clear photocopy of two pieces of valid identification. One must be a photo ID and both must contain name and date of birth.
