Landing from overseas

Landing within Canada

Typically the examination interviews are done in groups. Some CIC offices require the sponsor to be present, while others do not. Your letter will specify whether your sponsor's presence is required at the interview.

First thing that will happen once the examination interviews start is that they will hand out the Confirmation of Permanent Residence form (IMM5292) to each applicant and the officers will go over the information printed on the form. The applicants will be asked to verify whether there the information is correct.

Once that is done, the individual interviews will start and each applicant will be called up to the front (with the sponsor if they are required to be present). The applicant will be asked to present his/her passport and photos. If the sponsor is present, he/she is required to present a photo identification.

The officer will then ask the applicant a couple simple questions to make sure the applicant is still eligible for permanent residence. The questions may include:

  • Are you still living at the address shown on the COPR;
  • Do you have any dependent children outside Canada;
  • Have you committed any crimes while in Canada;

Once that is completed, the applicant will be asked to sign the COPR. A copy of the COPR will be given to the applicant and he/she will formally become a permanent resident of Canada.

The PR card will arrive in the mail approximately 30 days after the examination interview.
