The Client ID Number is a unique identifier given to every person who has a file with Citizenship and Immigration Canada, this includes sponsors as well as applicants for temporary and permanent resident status.

The format of the Client ID Number is two groups of four numbers, separated by a dash. For example, 1234-5678.

The number on the permanent resident card is the client ID number. If you first came to Canada as a student, the eight-digit number on your first study permit is your client ID number.

The Client ID Number remains the same for life, whatever your status in Canada or as an applicant.
