Approval in principle, also known as "First stage approval" is the stage of the in Canada Permanent Resident application process that is reached when Citizenship and Immigration Canada determines that the applicant is a legitimate member of the class under which they have applied.

Once approval in principle is reached, the applicant can apply for an Open Work Permit and/or Open Study Permit, a SIN, and if they do not already have it, health care coverage.

Following approval in principle, admissibility checks are completed and a final decision is made. If the applicant is determined to be admissible to Canada, they attend a landing interview and become a Permanent Resident.
